Shopify SEO for Indian stores is not a theme setting labelled “SEO”. Google ranks the collection you actually publish, the product copy a shopper can read on a phone, and whether the page finishes loading on a mid-range Android on 4G. ShubhKarma Tech builds and audits Shopify stores from Dehradun for brands that sell across India — jewellery, apparel, hospitality shops, specialist retail — and the same three things keep showing up: messy collections, English-only titles for Hindi queries, and apps that ruin LCP.
This guide is the Shopify SEO work we scope before anyone buys another app. It is written for founders who already have a store, not a pitch for a headless rebuild.
What Shopify already gives you (and what it does not)
Shopify gives you product and collection URLs, a sitemap, canonical tags on the default templates, and hosting. That is a start. It does not write unique collection copy. It does not stop you creating two collections for the same products. It does not compress the hero video an app injected on the homepage. It does not add Hindi variants unless you build them.
If Search Console shows products indexed and collections as “Crawled — currently not indexed”, the theme is usually fine. The collection page is thin: a grid, a one-line description, and filters that change the URL without unique content.
Collection architecture that can rank
Indian shoppers search the way they buy: material, occasion, city, size, price band. “Gold necklace”, “wedding sherwani”, “Dehradun homestay gift shop”, “cotton kurta under 2000”. Those are collection intents, not homepage intents.
Build collections that match a real query. One primary collection per intent. A product can sit in more than one collection, but each collection URL needs its own H1, a short unique intro, and internal links from the journal or homepage. Do not clone “All products” ten times with a different filter.
Avoid filter URLs as the ranking URL. Faceted navigation (`?color=red`) is useful for shoppers. It is a duplicate-content trap if those URLs get indexed. Keep the canonical on the clean collection, noindex obvious filter combinations, and put the copy on the collection you want to rank.
Name the collection the way people search, then write two or three sentences that only that collection can say: who it is for, what is in it, shipping or making-time notes. That is Shopify collection SEO. A keyword in the menu is not enough.
Product page SEO that is not stuffed
A product title is a title, not a keyword dump. “Handwoven pashmina shawl — natural dye, 100 × 200 cm” helps a shopper and a crawler. “Buy pashmina shawl online India cheap best pashmina Dehradun” helps no one.
The description should answer what it is, what it is made of, size, care, who it is for, and how long dispatch takes from your warehouse or workshop. If you ship from Dehradun or Delhi NCR, say so when it is true. Fake “same-day all-India” copy is a return ticket.
Use Shopify’s fields: product type, vendor, tags you actually filter on, and metafields for material, size chart, and occasion. Dumping everything into the rich-text box makes variants and collections harder to reuse.
One H1. Unique images with compressed files, not a 4MB PNG of a white background. Alt text that describes the product, not “image1”. Related products should be a real merchandising choice, not a random app widget that shifts layout.
Hindi, English, and how people actually search
A large share of Indian product search is Hindi in Latin script, Hindi in Devanagari, or a mix: “gold haar”, “saree”, “kurta set”. If your only titles are polished English, you miss the query.
You do not need a fully translated store on day one. You do need the words your buyers type on the collections and products that matter. A collection called “Wedding jewellery” can say Haar, set, and polki in the intro if that is how the catalogue is searched. Markets that are clearly Hindi-first deserve a language alternative or a dedicated collection, not a plugin that auto-translates the checkout into broken copy.
Hreflang only if you truly maintain two languages. A machine-translated duplicate of every product is a duplicate-content problem, not Shopify SEO India.
Mobile speed is ranking and conversion
Core Web Vitals on Shopify in India fail for boring reasons: an unoptimised slideshow, a reviews app that loads on first paint, a sticky announcement bar plus a popup plus a WhatsApp widget, and product images served at desktop width on a phone.
Fix the theme before you buy a speed app. Limit homepage sections. Lazy-load below-the-fold apps. Serve images at the width they display. Kill the app that injects a font you already load. Test on a ₹15,000 Android on 4G, not only on Wi-Fi in the office.
Shopify’s own CDN helps. It cannot save a theme that paints three full-width videos before the first product. LCP should be the product or collection image, not a popup.
Technical hygiene specific to Shopify
Check the online store password is off. Check you are not indexing `/collections/all` as the main shop if a tighter collection should rank. Check duplicate products created by import tools. Check that old theme preview URLs are not in the sitemap.
Point the primary domain at the store you sell on. www and apex should resolve to one host. Shopify can do that; leaving both live with different titles is a canonical mess.
Blog posts on Shopify only help if they link to a collection or product and are not “10 tips for success”. A material guide, a size guide, a making-of from the workshop — those earn internal links and, sometimes, a citation.
What we will not sell as Shopify SEO
A pack of backlinks to product URLs. DA or DR packages. Guaranteed page-one for “buy X online India”. Auto-generated collection text. An app that “does SEO” by stuffing titles.
Shopify SEO for Indian stores is architecture, copy, and speed. If you want a storefront that can rank and still be edited in the theme editor, that is the work.
